What is a mushroom spore and what are the other features found on a typical mushroom? Let’s take a look at the fascinating anatomy of mushrooms.
What Are The Spores Of A Mushroom?
Mushroom spores contain all of the necessary ingredients to form a new fungus. After the spore has been released and settles on the forest floor, it starts sending out hyphae to establish the fungus and gather nutrients.
Once the spore has sent out its hyphae, they will meet up with the hyphae of another mushroom. Following the beginning of the reproduction process, the mushrooms form the structures of a “fruiting body” responsible for producing and dispersing spores.
The button stage is the first form of this fruiting body. What starts as a tiny button can grow into a large mushroom in a short amount of time.
Stems, Caps And Gills
The mature fruiting body of a mushroom can feature various structures. Most of us envision the mushroom having a cap, stem and gills, The cap typically houses the spore producing surface of the fruiting body, consisting of pores, gills, teeth and ridges/false gills.
The majority of mushrooms can produce spores on their gills. These spores will fall off the gills in a fine powder and can travel some distance due to wind or other causes before landing. The life cycle then begins all over again.
It is interesting to note that the fruiting body will only exist for a very short amount of time. The mycelium of a mushroom, however, can survive for a very long time. In fact, one colony of Armillaria solidipes in the Malheur National Forest (Oregon) is estimated to be at least 2,400 years old.
