There are hundreds of types of magic mushrooms, each with differing levels of potency. Potent mushrooms will typically lead to more intense trips. Magic mushrooms continue to show potential in treating a variety of health conditions, but it’s crucial to understand just how powerful these substances can be before taking them. Let’s take a look at some of the strongest magic mushrooms below!
What Are The Strongest Magic Mushrooms?
Widely considered to be the magic mushroom with the highest concentration of psilocybin, Psilocybe azurescens, is rarely found outside of nature. Azurescens only grow along Oregon and Washington’s coastal region. Unlike cubensis, it typically grows in mature/pasteurized soil in an environment with a high lignin content, such as grass or wood. These fungi will only be spotted during the latter months of the year, from October to December. This is because Psilocybe azurescens thrives in cold weather below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cubensis, meanwhile, prefers temperatures above 70 degrees. In nature, these fungi are located in tightly packed clusters of mature fruit, featuring a small 30-100 millimeter cap. The cap’s shape is often what leads to it being referred to as the “flying saucer”. Caps are caramel colored, sitting atop a thin and pale stem.
Mycologists have documented its extreme propensity for bruising colorfully due to its high psilocybin content. When air comes into contact with psilocybin, a chemical reaction occurs which changes its color. This is exactly why these fungi end up being blue or purple. Psilocybe azurescens typically bruises either a dark blue or black color.
1. Flying Saucers (Psilocybe Azurescens)
Psilocybe azurescens is the strongest strain, yet the public knows very little about this strain. This is because Psilocybe azurescens is not actually a strain, it is a lineage or species within the Psilocybe genus. If this really is the most potent magic mushroom, though, why don’t we hear about it more often? The belief is this is the case due to the fact that azurescens is very difficult to locate beyond its natural setting. In addition, Psilocybe azurescens is notoriously difficult to cultivate.
Azurescens also has strict needs for both substrate and temperature. Many microscopists would love the chance to get this on a slide for examination, but legal cultivation by mycology labs is simply too difficult right now. At the very least, there are several other potent strains available currently.
2. Blue Meanies (Panaeolus Cyanescens)
Far more potent than the typical cubensis, these mushrooms acquired their unique name from the antagonists in the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine. Pan Cyans, true to their name, often turn blue when bruised. Cyanescens even means “blue”, after all.
These mushrooms are tall and skinny, typically featuring small caps. Blue Meanies enjoy tropical or subtropical regions. Often found growing in Hawaii, they have also been spotted in parts of Asia.
3. P. Subs (Psilocybe Subaruginosa)
Discovered in New Zealand and Australia, P. Subs are believed to be one of the most potent of the psilocybes. These mushrooms are distinguishable by their wide and pointy caps.
Most experts believe these mushrooms became popular in the ’60s and ’70s amongst Australian surfers. They eventually made their way around the world as hippie counterculture became more widespread.
4. Penis Envy (Psilocybe Cubensis)
Easily recognizable from its phallus shape, this common type of psilocybe cubensis, is said to be more potent than regular cubes or cubenses.
This mushroom is getting increasingly popular throughout the community nowadays. Penis Envy crosses are seemingly everywhere, most notably Albino Penis Envy.
5. Liberty Caps (Psilocybe Semilanceata)
Liberty Caps are extremely potent, featuring tiny and pointy caps. They are widespread and thrive in wet, grassy environments. Cold to temperate regions like the British Isles and Pacific Northwest are perfect places for these mushrooms to grow.
Liberty Caps can also grow in the Southern Hemisphere. They are thought to be one of the first magic mushrooms to be identified and analyzed in Europe. Their origins go back several hundred years.
*Please note in 47 out of 50 states, psychedelic mushrooms are perfectly legal. Users can buy, sell and own psilocybin mushroom spores for research purposes only. However, it is illegal in nearly all jurisdictions to cultivate magic mushrooms. Psilocybin spores are never to be cultivated. The only exception is in New Mexico, where it remains legal to grow mushrooms as long as no steps are taken to preserve the mushrooms. Make sure to familiarize yourself with your local psychedelic spore laws before placing an order. Psilocybin mushroom spores are currently illegal in California, Georgia and Idaho.
